The Process Project (2018)

One week | One process | One stool

‘The Process Project’ is motivated by a desire to highlight the methodology and life-cycle of a product. A collection of stools (one a week), each one made using a different technique and process. With almost three quarters of the population predicted to live in cities by 2050, it is crucial that people pay attention to a product’s life cycle and do not become disconnected from how the materials for their products are sourced. The time restriction was key as it allowed me to reverse the conventional order, which usually puts design before making and shifted the focus onto the process. Limiting myself to a week per stool required me to make rather than hesitate.

The Foraged Stool

Week 1: make a stool using locally foraged wood and only a select amount of hand tools and twine.

The Laser Stool

Week 2: make a stool using just the laser cutter. Must slot together precisely and use no other materials for joining.

The Lathed Stool

Week 3: make a stool that highlights the process and technique of using the lathe.

The Steamed Stool

Week 4: make a stool that highlights the technique of steam bending.
