NURDkit (2015)

‘NURDkit’ is a toolkit designed to facilitate easier removal of plastic nurdles from beaches, whilst also educating and highlighting the larger issue of plastic marine waste. Nurdles are small plastic pellets and the raw material from which nearly all our plastic goods are made. Due to spills from shipping and industrial facilities, nurdles are dispersed into our environment and attract and concentrate environmental pollutants to highly toxic levels. They are often mistaken as prey and ingested by many marine animals and seabirds. The NURDkit is fabricated from recycled nurdles collected from various beaches around Scotland.

Making of the NURDkit

Each tool within the NURDkit has been developed to make the process of collecting nurdles faster and easier. Made from thousands of recycled nurdles, the tools act as a functional object as well as showcasing the issue in a visual display. Aimed as a science kit for schools, the NURDkit can be used for experiments and educating about the wider issue of plastic marine waste. The physical act of finding and cleaning up nurdles, engraves a stronger sense of empathy and highlights the need for the plastic industry to clean up their act!
